FAQ
We know many people have questions before booking their first glass course. Here we have gathered answers to the most common questions about the courses in the Tiffany technique – and about the artworks, shipping and materials. If you cannot find the answer, you are always very welcome to contact us.
Courses, art and materials
Do I need any previous experience?
No. Our glass courses are well suited for beginners. You do not need to have worked with glass or any other craft before. We go through each step carefully and you receive personal guidance throughout the course.
What will I learn during the course?
You will learn the basics of the Tiffany technique and how to work with coloured glass: how to plan a project, cut glass, grind edges, apply copper foil, solder the pieces together and do the final finishing. The goal is for you to feel confident with the technique and be able to create your own glass items.
What do you make during the course?
This varies depending on the course and how far you get, but many people make things like candle lanterns, window decorations, hearts, flowers, angels, small pictures or other decorative items. Each course leaves room for creativity and personal expression.
How long is a glass course?
The beginner's course is a full day, normally 10:00–16:30, giving you plenty of time to work at a relaxed pace. The intermediate course is two days. On special occasions we also offer other formats. Times are always stated for each course date.
How many participants are there on the courses?
We work in small groups, normally 4–5 people, to be able to give everyone personal guidance. This also creates a calm and inspiring environment where everyone can develop at their own pace. The number of available places is shown for each course date.
Are materials and tools included?
You borrow tools and an apron from us during the course. Materials, however, are not included in the course fee. Glass, copper foil, solder, patina and other consumables are added based on what you choose to create. Because this can vary a lot between different projects, we have chosen to bill materials separately. This is paid on site at the end of the course, and an estimate of the typical cost is usually stated in the course information.
Do I need to bring anything myself?
Normally you only need to bring a good mood and a desire to create. As we work with glass, you should wear old clothes you don't mind getting dirty. You can borrow an apron from us. Fully enclosed indoor shoes are a requirement, meaning shoes that cover your entire foot. If a course requires something special, such as your own sketches, it will be stated in the course information.
Can I take my finished artwork home?
Yes. What you create during the course is your own and of course you take it home with you when the course ends – provided the work is finished and ready for transport.
Is it difficult to work with glass?
Many people think glass art is much harder than it is. With the right instructions, most people learn the basics quickly. Our job is to guide you through every step so you feel secure the whole way.
Is the Tiffany technique the same as glass fusing?
No. In the Tiffany technique, pieces of glass are cut, edged with copper foil and soldered together into finished items. Fusing instead relies on glass being melted together in a kiln. Our courses focus primarily on the Tiffany technique.
Can I give a glass course as a gift?
Yes. A gift card for a glass course is a popular present for anyone who loves creativity, craftsmanship and personal experiences. Gift cards are purchased directly on the website – for a specific course or for an amount of your choice – and are sent via email to you or directly to the recipient on the date you choose. The recipient chooses the course date themselves. The gift card covers the course fee – materials are paid on site at the end of the course.
Is the course suitable for older participants?
Absolutely. Our participants are of very varying ages and backgrounds. The most important thing is that you enjoy creating and want to try something new. We adapt our guidance to each participant's experience and circumstances.
Is the course suitable for younger participants?
Yes, but for open courses there are certain restrictions. Anyone under 18 must be registered by a parent or legal guardian (see point 1 in the course terms). You are welcome to contact us before booking for a younger participant, and we will let you know what applies.
Can we book as a group of friends or a family?
Yes. Many people attend a course together with a friend, partner or family member. You can also contact us to book a private course date for a smaller group.
Do you offer corporate events?
Yes. We are happy to arrange creative activities for companies, work groups and organisations with up to about 6 people. A glass course is a popular way to combine creativity, teamwork and a different experience. Get in touch and we will put together a package that suits you.
Where are the courses held?
In ASM Design's glass art studio at Hökvägen 6 in Bjärred, between Lund and Malmö in Skåne. Participants come here from all over Sweden and Denmark – most commonly from Malmö, Lund, Lomma, Helsingborg, Landskrona and other towns in southern Sweden. Now and then participants also come from places like the USA, England, Asia and other parts of Europe.
Where do I park and how do I find the entrance?
You can park for free on the streets outside. The entrance to the studio is via the carport – walk up to the white door at the far end with the ASM Design sign. A map and directions can be found under Find the studio.
How do I book a course?
You book and pay directly here on the website under Courses, using a card. You will receive a booking confirmation via email and a reminder a few days before the course. If the course is fully booked, you can join the waiting list and be notified automatically if a place becomes available. If you have questions before booking, you are welcome to get in touch via the contact form, at 0705-42 46 34 or anne-lie@asmdesign.se.
Can I cancel?
Yes. Within 14 days of the booking confirmation you can exercise your right of withdrawal and get a refund of the course fee, provided the course has not started. After that, an administration fee of 10% (at least 100 SEK) applies if there are more than 7 days left, half the fee 3–7 days before, and no refund later than 3 days before the course starts. In case of illness with a medical certificate, we refund the fee for unused parts. If you want to give your place to someone else, that is fine with our approval. Everything is stated in the course terms.
Can I continue after the beginner's course?
Yes. Many people return to develop their skills and work on larger projects. We offer a two-day intermediate course and recurring course dates, and are always happy to inspire continued creation in glass.
Are the artworks original?
Yes. The original artworks under Original artworks are handmade by Anne-Lie Sävström and are one-of-a-kind pieces. When a piece is sold, it is moved to the gallery, but you are always welcome to ask about a similar commissioned piece.
What techniques does Anne-Lie Sävström work with?
Primarily Tiffany technique (glass pieces edged with copper foil and soldered together with tin), fusing (glass melted together in a kiln), and glass painting (pigments fired into the glass). She sometimes combines glass with wood, metal, and stone.
Can you ship original artworks and goods?
As standard, original artworks and goods are collected from the studio at Hökvägen 6 in Bjärred – this is stated on each product, and we will get in touch when your order is ready for collection. Some items can be shipped within Sweden and to Denmark, in which case you can choose home delivery at checkout. If you would like something shipped that is normally for collection only, get in touch and we will see what we can do.
Why must certain materials be approved before payment is charged?
Certain materials, such as leaded solder and specific chemicals, are only sold to professional or authorized buyers. The amount is reserved on your card and is only charged once we have approved the order. If it is not approved, the reservation is released.
Can I visit the studio?
Yes, you have an open invitation. Someone is often in the studio between 10–16, but please give us a call beforehand on 0705-42 46 34 so we can make sure we are able to welcome you.
